# Semantic Scholar

> Search Semantic Scholar (S2) from inside Clevia to find papers, import rich metadata, and attach PDFs when available. Great for quickly seeding a project library before deep analysis and citation.

## How it works (at a glance)

1. **Open**: `Add → Semantic Scholar`.
2. **Search**: by title, author, DOI, arXiv ID, or keywords.
3. **Select**: one or many results; preview abstracts and fields.
4. **Import**:
   * **Metadata only**, or
   * **Metadata + PDF** (when S2 provides an open-access link).
5. **Post-import**: Clevia runs processing/OCR and indexing → items become **Ready** for search, chat, and citations.

<Note>
  Not all results include downloadable PDFs. When no PDF is available, you’ll still get complete metadata and identifiers
</Note>

### Step-by-step

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the S2 search">
    In the Library, click **Add → Semantic Scholar** to open the **S2 Search** dialog
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the right paper">
    * Search by **exact title** or paste a **DOI / arXiv ID** for higher precision
    * Use `author:last-name` plus a **keyword** from the title to disambiguate

    **Result list shows**: title, authors, venue/year, abstract snippet, citation count, DOI/arXiv, and an **Available PDF** indicator (if present)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select results">
    * Tick the checkbox next to each paper you want
    * Click a row to **preview** details before importing
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose import options">
    * **Import metadata only**: creates a reference with identifiers and fields
    * **Import metadata + PDF**: attaches the PDF from S2’s open-access link (when provided)
  </Step>

  <Step title="Finish">
    Click **Import**. Watch **Processing/OCR** badges; items flip to **Ready** when indexed
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Check>
  * Prefer **DOI** when known (fastest and most accurate).
  * For arXiv preprints, paste the **arXiv ID**; you can later replace with the **published DOI**.
  * Add a year or venue term (e.g., “NeurIPS 2017”) to narrow results.
</Check>

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="I can’t find a known paper">
    * Paste its **DOI** directly, or try the publisher title
    * Check spelling/diacritics; add venue/year to the query
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Wrong record imported">
    Use **Delete** and re-import, or **Replace identifiers** with the correct DOI → **Fetch**
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="PDF didn’t attach">
    The S2 entry may not include an open-access link. Download from the publisher (if licensed) and **Attach** via the **Reference details** pane
  </Accordion>
