# Viewing reference details

> Open a reference to see metadata, abstract, attachments, outbound links (DOI/PMID/arXiv), and quick actions like open PDF, copy citation, edit metadata, move/tag, and Ask Clevia.

### Open the details modal or pane

    In the references list, click a card Title to open the Details pane

    In the library left panel, click on a reference and the right pane will show details

### Common actions from details

* Open PDF → launches the viewer at page 1 (or last position)
* Ask Clevia → starts a file-scoped chat (citations link back here)
* Copy → DOI, BibTeX, or formatted citation (toolbar icons)
* Edit metadata → fix titles, authors, or add identifiers
* Move / Tag → re-organize quickly without leaving the pane
* Replace file → upload a newer PDF while keeping the reference stable

### Field notes

* Authors, Year, Title, Venue, Pages, DOI are the minimum set most styles need.
* The Citekey powers @references in the editor - keep it readable and unique

## Troubleshooting

    Ensure the attachment is the primary PDF; if missing/corrupted, use Replace. Very large scans may open slower; see Import files → OCR support

  <Accordion title="Metadata is wrong/empty">
    Click Edit metadata; Add by identifier and paste a DOI/PMID/arXiv. If the paper has multiple versions (preprint vs. published), verify the DOI
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Citekey conflicts">
    Edit the citekey to a unique value (e.g., lastnameYYYYshorttitle)
  </Accordion>
