# Edit metadata

> Clean, complete metadata makes your library searchable and your citations correct. This page shows how to edit title, authors, year, venue, DOI, use autofill from identifiers, plus keyboard tips and validation rules.

### Open the metadata editor

  <Step title="Open details pane">
    In the library, click a reference Title to open the Details pane
  </Step>

  <Step title="Edit metadata">
    Click pencil icon in the top right corner
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change metadata">
    Make changes and press enter/tab
  </Step>

### Fields you can edit

* Title → Use the published title exactly as it appears
* Citation key → Edit citation key for internal use
* DOI → Paste the DOI identifier only (e.g., 10.48550/arXiv.1706.03762)

### Effects on citations & the editor

* In-text citations and bibliographies use your metadata + selected style
* Citekey powers @references in the editor. Changing the citekey can affect existing mentions - prefer to keep it stable once you've started writing

## Troubleshooting

    * Try a different source (publisher DOI vs. aggregator), or use PMID/arXiv
    * Check for copy/paste of a full URL—paste just the identifier

  <Accordion title="Fetched data is wrong">
    * Choose Keep mine for affected fields and correct manually
    * Some records have multiple versions—confirm you're fetching the correct one
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can't save (validation error)">
    * Hover the error badge to see the rule; fix and retry
    * If year is unknown, leave it blank rather than guessing
  </Accordion>
